The use of T5 lighting began in the 1990s, which allows the tubes to be fitted into smaller spaces. As a result, the smaller light source enables more accurate control of beam direction by means of optics (reflectors and lenses in the luminary). Countless establishments have been properly illuminated since the emergence of the fluorescent light. Then the world saw another breakthrough in fluorescent technology. The T5 light had already been introduced in the American market in 1995. However, selection manufacturers are now aggressively marketing an innovative T5 lamp. They focus on using the latest optical materials to create T5 luminaries specifically for high-end new construction.

The introduction of the improved T5 lamp has left many end-users being confused between the T5 and its close counterpart T8 light. End-users find it hard to tell the minimal and optimal temperature and system efficacy difference between the two lights. Decision-making became even harder with the release of another fluorescent model called T5HO in 1998. Nevertheless, there are several reasons why the T5 lamp is more efficient.

The 4-foot T5 is relatively longer from pin end to pin end for the sake of comparison, allowing it to provide more light output and efficacy than T8. The T5 and T5HO have equal length and diameter, but the 4-foot T5 has an initial rated light output of 2,900 lumens, as opposed to5, 000 for the 4-foot T5HO, which means savings on installation and long-term maintenance; meanwhile, the T8 has 2,950 lumens. In addition, the T5 lamp is ideal for low-profile fixtures like cove lighting and display cases due to its thinness and brilliance. Different new fixture designs conform to the dimensions and characteristics of T5. In turn, the T5 provides uniform lumen output and good brightness ratio across the ceiling. For instance, the bottoms of the fixtures would usually hang below 7 feet in a typical office space with low ceiling, which is against building codes. However, it is possible to place smaller and sleeker fixtures with the use of T5.
